This kickstand case was designed for ESR, a global tech brand specializing in smartphone and tablet accessories. As part of a new product series extension, ESR aimed to introduce built-in kickstand phone cases into its lineup. Based on the provided specifications and target market positioning, we developed multiple iPhone kickstand concepts, validating functionality and form through rapid prototyping and 3D printing.

Results

The original proposal was developed for the iPhone 7 series. Its design language was later extended to subsequent iPhone models, becoming a core product line within the company’s protective case portfolio.

Style Meets Convenience

The product targets young urban professionals who value a compact, stylish appearance without compromising protection or functionality. The design minimizes overt functional expression, introducing a clean and modern aesthetic. The kickstand is subtly integrated as a split-line decorative element, with carefully designed transition surfaces that maintain a slim overall profile while preserving usability.

The development process began with rapid mock-ups to explore various kickstand mechanisms and structural feasibility. Iterative prototypes were used to refine stability, usability, and form integration.

Hands-free viewing

The built-in kickstand provides stable support in both portrait and landscape orientations, enabling effortless media viewing and video calls.

Protection

The case features a dual-layer protection system: a rigid, impact-resistant polycarbonate (PC) outer shell combined with a shock-absorbing TPU inner layer that enhances drop protection while maintaining a comfortable hand feel.
